This is a WARNING to all travelers passing through Exeter, NH: Avoid staying at The Exeter Inn located at 90 Front St., Exeter.
Fantastic hotel that is both modern and holds on to its history. Restaurant is good too.
Happy travels.
I now know that their high ratings are self-proclaimed. And being in marketing, I realize that the only thing these folks did right was hiring a website designer that was talented enough to help them portray themselves as "The Ideal New Hampshire Venue" when the reality is they are the farthest from it.
I am a well traveled businessman that made the mistake of choosing the Exeter Inn for a business/family trip. The charming photos on their website depicting beautiful accommodations and award winning food lured me in but the experience was easily the worst in my extensive travel career.
Being a successful businessman, I am fortunate enough to be able to choose where I stay when traveling, and it has been a LONG TIME since I've had an experience of this nature from a place claiming to be so luxurious.
The outside of this Inn lends a nice New England charm and only adds to the quaintness of the town. I will give my pros and cons with our experience in staying here.
This is America...you have the right to choose where you want to stay...but I would feel ashamed of myself if I didn't take the time to share this story in the hopes that it helps prevent even one more innocent individual from making the same mistake I did.
A cute county style inn. Very pleasant staff. Small, well laid out, and clean rooms. I liked the dining room and dinner last night. Fresh baked cookies in my room were a bonus. Gave it 4/5 because the windows let in a little if the outdoor coolness and the road noise. Overall: Recommended.
Filthy linens, unbelievably small rooms, and rude unprofessional staff (from the top down) are just a few of the frustrations I was subjected to.
Cons: we made reservations for a normal room one night and the discounted room another. That reservation was lost and we ended up with the discounted both nights. This was a problem because of the disconnected bathroom. The building smells like an old building. We felt it could use some upgrading to maintains the integrity of the time period it was built in. The restaurant did not match the decor or the feel of the rest of the hotel. The flow of style within a hotel only adds to the integrity of it. The carpet was old and didn't match. The room carpet felt dirty and old. The rooms were in need of upgrading because of peeled wallpaper and scuffed up furniture. The bathroom was in need of repair with peeled paper and cracked tiles. This gave the feel of a 2 star hotel. We waited several minutes to be seated at the restaurant and even though they saw us they didn't assist us in seating. We decided to come back later and found the waitress to be impersonal and lacking in professionalism that should accompany such an expensive menu. We waited a long time for our food. We had to ask for the bread basket that compliments a meal. Food prices were way too high. They had a wedding that night and from the third floor the sounds and music shook the house until 10:30-11:00 at night. This was unacceptable for the rest of the patrons. The overall sound in the hotel carries. The doors aren't hung right so they have to be slammed which can Be heard throughout but the hall.
Overall, if you can get this hotel for a low price range than you get more of a 2 star hotel and all the cons would be conducive to a lower end hotel. We wouldn't stay here again unless the price was low enough.
Hotel with historic feel and classic elegance. Room I stayed in was clean, neat and the bathroom featured a fully tiled shower and they have the most wonderful smelling soaps! Also the breakfast at the hotel restaurant is excellent.
Pros: outside grounds and building are beautiful. Good location. Good price but only if you can get it for a low $100 range. We stayed in the $99 room that is discounted because the bathroom is across the hall. It is private but inconvenient. They supply cookies and bottled water every day. Bed felt comfortable and bathroom was average. Staff at the front desk was friendly.
